white person talking about racism, anti-blackness
So: Hi new masto users. There's a lot of trouble with anti-blackness and other forms of racism here.
One of the things I've liked the most with fedi is the opportunity to listen to people suffering from racism.
It's given me so much practice in sitting with my discomfort. I'm eternally grateful for the people who have been patient with me in this.
New users, grab this opportunity, if it's new to you. We're raised in a racist society, we've got racism in our heads. Resist that racism.
And if you're white, just shut up and listen, as much as you can.
For those fleeing Twitter, know that I post everything on my personal website first and syndicate it to a number of places including Twitter and Mastodon.
Much of my short status updates cross post to @chrisaldrich while everything can be found at the "Mastodon account" @firstname.lastname@example.org, which is really just my personal website pretending to be a Mastodon server.
If you want your own website that acts a lot lik
Maybe time to repost http://www.kevinmarks.com/mastodontheory.html for those showing up from twitter
The structure of Mastodon and GnuSocial instances provides multiple visible publics by default, and Mastodon's columnar layout (on wider screens) emphasises this. You have your own public of those you follow, and the notifications sent back in response, as with Twitter. But you also have two more timeline choices - the Local and the Federated.
p.s. To set a post's privacy on Mastodon click on the globe (🌎 or 🌐 ) icon when you're writing the message. The DM privacy setting is called either "Direct" or "Only people I mention".
2) https://communitywiki.org/trunk is a wonderful place to find people who are active. it is human moderated. if you decide to stick around and have the bandwidth to do so, consider joining a list to welcome others as well.
🧐 Experiment with different accounts on different instances (sites like https://instances.social/list can help you). Every instance has different feel, vibe and community (and rules). Find one that you prefer or use mutliple accounts/personas/instances.
❓ Ask around! Many people will be pleased to guide you.. There is no stupid question :)
💖 Be part of making the Fediverse better and more welcoming!
@roblef yeah, there are three timelines:
* Your main one which is all people you follow.
* Local which is everyone on an instance, followed or not.
* Federated which is everyone from every instance that's followed.
As one of the main Mastodon developers, I can't promise you that Mastodon will be a complete and exact Twitter replacement for you, but it may fit your use-cases, at least it does for me.
Just keep in mind that it is not exactly the same thing, some core design decisions are different (there isn't an unique centrally-governed website, but many interconnected servers operated by different individuals and organizations) and thus the tradeoffs can be different as well.
While I personally don't think Mastodon should aim at being an exact replacement to Twitter, I do hope Mastodon can be useful to more people wanting an alternative to Twitter! And I know there are lots of room for improvement, on things we do know, and on things we don't.
Also keep in mind that Mastodon is developed by only two core developers payed through a non-profit funded through sponsorship, grants and donations, so please be patient!
BOOM! Nextcloud just announced they're investing in greater social functionality to make it a full member of the Fediverse. https://twitter.com/fkarlitschek/status/1518678584524685313
Hello to all you brilliant new people on Mastodon and the Fediverse!
If you're wondering how to get started on here, take a look at this guide for beginners:
If there's anything you want to know, if you have any questions, reply to this post or send me a message and I will try to find the answer 🤔 (And don't worry if you think it's a stupid question, there's no such thing!)
As federated as email was meant to be, federation is now compromised by Google, Microsoft, Apple, and apple. Federated email is now broken because Big Tech are the gatekeepers of email.
Hi @rstats folks! It's been a while :)
So, if you want an alternative to Slack (in the same vein as Mastodon being an alternative to Twitter, I guess) then please do come and join us!
