@resynth1943 I'd say as long as it's regular people with modest followings it can scale without problems; but once there are influencers with millions of followers we need instances that can handle high loads for individual accounts.

@resynth1943 Yes and no. It's less complex to operate smaller instances than a large system. But some features like global trends or a user search covering the entire network are not easily possible with distributed systems so Mastodon doesn't have them.

@resynth1943 Twitter operates at a much larger scale than any Fediverse instance or even the whole Fediverse itself. Being able to support users with millions of followers takes some effort in terms of DevOps.

@markosaric I think it makes sense for domains to google.*, amazon.* to be a first-party set. But with static lists or signed assertions from browser vendors this is again something that benefits only larger multi-brand publishers - who could use this for ad (re)targeting within their network and thus shifts more power to them and away from smaller sites.

Hey devs, please use semantic html. This is important!

When listing things, use ul/li! When writing things, use p! When adding navigation, use nav! When putting the main part of your website inside a div, use main! Please use h1, h2, h3 for your titles! Don't use table for layout, they are for data!

Screen readers users have shortcuts to jump to all those parts of your website instead of reading it from top to bottom. But it only works with semantic html. So please help them! :tealheart:

@jeremiahlee That website looks impressive and I like the idea. Also made me find out about hCaptcha, so another Google service for which there's an alternative.

@sid is the idea that you should have a website on your own domain, and a set of lightweight technologies (webmention etc.) to help independent websites communicate.

Whether against white people exists or not: if that is what you want to talk about in light of the killing, it shows you're not interested in talking about other people's (e.g., PoC) issues. And that is a part of structural racism.

There are various formats to describe data models. One of my favorite approaches is Linked Data based on RDF. That is why I based CloudObjects on this technology. My idea was to use RDF to describe APIs and the configuration of various application components. I quickly realized that a s... lukasrosenstock.net

I'm tired of folks who argue like we just have the binary choice between exactly the we have right now or the failed soviet-style .

In the same manner, I'm also tired of people whose arguments always boil down to "X is wrong/bad/unfair, hence capitalism sucks".

I have created this account because I like both and the .

My personal blog / domain is hosted by micro.blog and you can follow it directly from the Fediverse via @lukas.

Still, I wanted to have a separate Mastodon account but not on the official instance (where I was earlier) because it's a after all.

@Fellmoon I haven't heard of anything, but I guess at least for static sites a distributed hosting system like or could be considered an alternative.

One thing I miss in the social media landscape is a rate-limited network, only allowing enough posts so it takes, say, one hour per week to catch up with 500 followed accounts.

That way I could actually stay up to date with all of my friends I made around the world, the quiet and the active ones.

@evelynyap @kev I agree that there is value in a place other than your own to verify the identity, and fulfills that role well.

In my opinion, their cryptographic setup is sound and there are no privacy or security risks even with new owners.

I can agree on not wanting to invest much in Keybase when you're unsure about their future, but I see no reason to now unless you want to point a middle finger to them and Zoom for the acquisition.

Her talk’s objective was to motivate developers to write technical tutorials and provide them with the basics they need to get started. Lauren has an unusual ... lukasrosenstock.net

@evelynyap @kev Keybase is not a global blockchain. Every profile has its own tree of crypto verifications. You can't delete something without proof from your profile but you can drop the whole thing.

Come to think of it, I want #mastodon to be better than #twitter. And therefore, so should the apps. What if @Tusky and @fedilab had anti-addictive behavior features like optional pagination: people could turn it on, decide to read one or two pages and then go to sleep for example. Endless scrolling makes this difficult and fuels addiction.

I like having tools that can work well together. I don't like having all my tools tightly integrated, owned, and controlled by a single entity.
