If you have a Netgear Nighthawk R7000, I highly recommend confirming that your firmware is updated. I discovered that while mine was set to auto update, it was not actually doing so. I was a large amount of versions behind. The newest firmware also seemed to fix a bug I had too.

Any recommendations on alternatives to #Strava? Looking to track #running for an upcoming 5k I've got. I like Strava enough but I'm curious if there are other comparable options out there.

I even got time to watch more videos of people eating awesome food! What a world!

How many ways can I tell Nextcloud to not sync files? I've given it directory names, directories with globs after it, file extensions, etc. Still keeps trying to sync files it shouldn't.

Slapped together a hack for Dynamic DNS. Should probably use a service for this, but lolnope.

Note: not suggested at all if you actually care about your apps being online.

There's something special about finding recordings of live shows that you attended

@tchambers hi there! I think I’ve heard that Mastodon has a plug-in or slightly modified version to allow posts with longer character limits (maybe 1000). Do you know if that’s possible for this instance to have? I think it would be a nice to have feature, though not worth it if problems would arise from it.

Been meaning to set one of these up for the Instance for a long time.

But with the kind suggestion from @obsolete29, just got this live today.

Appreciate anyone's support to help us keep this labor of love of hosting, managing and evolving this instance going strong.

I enjoy Netflix still. Not quite as big of a consumer as I used to be, but i still enjoy it. I don’t even really mind a price hike or a family plan or whatever. Including ads into it will be the end of the line for me though. I don’t like ads, I don’t want personalized ads, and I don’t want to start paying more simply for the privilege of removing the ads. It’s not much of a stretch to imagine then creating a new tier with some ads as the standard, and premium will be what we have now.

Hey there new people!

If you've just joined here, you may be wondering if you need to sign up on multiple servers?

The short answer is no! One account on one server is enough 👍

Longer answer:

The servers on here talk to each other through a process called "Federation".

This might sound complicated and technical, but it's really not. You already use federated networks every day, and so does pretty much everyone in the world, even your grandparents.

When you phone someone, you don't need to be on the same provider or even in the same country, because the world's phone networks are connected together through federation.

When you email someone, you don't need to be on the same email provider, because the world's email providers are federated together.

Servers on Mastodon and the Fediverse are federated together in the same way phones or email are. One account on one server lets you seamlessly interact with people on other servers.

Amazing the difference state-of-mind makes.

Yesterday afternoon nothing was working. I couldn't even get a simple LED to illuminate in a circuit and must've check polarity and current-limit resistors a dozen times.

This morning with a few minutes everything is cleared up and fine. A wonky connector fixed.

Sometimes it's worth just putting things aside and leaving it for another day.
