Re- for the newcomers:

I've been on the internet since the mid 1990s. My nostalgia for those days means I'm into , , , , and other ancient and pseudo-ancient artifacts of the internet.

I write to get money. (I haven't written much code for fun in a long time, sadly.) When I'm not busy working or , I try to spend time on , mostly playing and guitar-adjacent things.

Remember, if you have been working from home and your work decides that they have to end that and you don't want to, make sure to frame everything in terms of them changing the relationship. Not 'I am not willing to come work in the office', it is 'I am saddened by your unwillingness to work with me in a reasonable way.'

Always put the responsibility/blame on them. They are making a change and it is their responsibility to deal with any problems from it. Don't let them pretend otherwise.

We have increasingly outsourced our decision-making to machine learning models ("the algorithm"). The whole point of building recommendation, sorting, and "decision support" systems on ML is to undertake assessments at superhuman speed and scale, which means that the idea of a "human in the loop" who validates machine judgment is a mere figleaf, and it only gets worse from here.

@RussSharek Nothing yet. It's been a while since I last looked around for an alternative. If #DDG could do this, others with similar claims for safeguarding privacy might be doing the same.

I think we need an independent body to investigate into this.

It is astounding that these people can publicly say "we've been working tirelessly behind the scenes" (in other words, behind the back of the users!) : nitter.net/shivan_kaul/status/

A reminder that Mastodon and the Fediverse do NOT use cryptocurrency, blockchains, NFTs, tokens, coins, mining, web3 or anything like that.

Masto and the Fedi run on traditional servers and use a sustainable network federation model somewhat similar to e-mail (that's why Fediverse addresses look similar to e-mail addresses).

Also a reminder there are no venture capital firms or other investors either. No one owns the network, each server is independent. Masto and Fedi server running costs are paid by their owners, sometimes with donations from users.

No one is getting rich from the Fediverse, it is all volunteers with some getting donations and a few getting modest grants from foundations. Please remember this when you interact with admins or developers.

(There might be some individual users who post about cryptocurrency/blockchain, but the infrastructure this place runs on doesn't use it at all.)

Tl:dr - Decentralisation does NOT mean cryptocurrency/blockchain

Every day I'm on a Linux machine I thank goodness that something like Linux exists and that it's the continuation of the Sun SPARCStations that I imprinted on as a college student.

It's remarkable how far we've come. Sure there are warts and issues abounding but just take a moment to appreciate where we're at and how far we've come.

this town isn't big enough for the both of us so it looks like we should build more housing and get rid of some restrictive low-density zoning

I would just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as ‘democracy’ is actually just ‘liberal capitalism’…

violence as an analogy, proof-of-work crypto

This is so good:
"The biggest one is “this incentivizes green power.” Which it does in the same way that a whole bunch of random shootings would incentivize bulletproof vests."

I'd say it's even worse than that because PoW crypto also eats up & destroys all the "green" power it "incentivizes".

Gmail will block all third party mail clients starting from June: pmail.com/newsflash.htm

That is, unless they pay $4500 minimum for an audit :D

Stop using gmail and enabling their monopolistic practices, if you already haven't.
