It was meltingly hot, which was a problem for someone made of ice.

She stared at her hands, normally a perfect cloudy glass, now slick and shrinking.

'That's it,' said her roommate. 'You're coming to work with me.'

The cold storage at the supermarket was bitingly refreshing and she soon felt like herself again.

Her roommate's co-workers were all very understanding. 'There just isn't good air con in the UK,' said one. 'Sometimes I think about hiding in there myself!'

Centuries before we had American Sign Language (#ASL), Native "Hand Talk" was thriving across North America. Plains Indian Sign Language (#PISL) was used so widely across the Great Plains that it became a universal language for both deaf and hearing people to communicate between tribes. At one point, tens of thousands of indigenous people used PISL for trade, hunting, conflict, storytelling and rituals. It formed the basis for ASL and has largely been lost to history. youtu.be/s1-StAlw3aE

The intent of the GDPR was to improve people's privacy online but the effect of it was every website now just has an annoying pop-up asking you to accept all cookies, and you have to click manage my cookies and uncheck everything and then click ok, and you have to do this every time because websites for some reason refuse to remember your preferences

Happy #GAAD. Go use a screen reader for a bit.

No, you don’t have to turn off your screen on your first day. Maybe just move the screen away and reduce the font size, relying on the voice to read the text but using your eyes for layout. That’s a good first step.

The documentary "Rams" resonated with me during the first lockdown in 2020, when the shortcomings of our society became visible to everyone.

I watched it again and again. It prompted me to use my portfolio website to write about what I care most. I started with one blog post and continued with the series Design, Digested – and then its newsletter.

From Gary Hustwit's LinkedIn:

"Legendary designer Dieter Rams is celebrating his 90th birthday this week, on May 20th. And it's become a tradition that on Dieter's birthday we show the documentary about him free worldwide. Since this is a big birthday, we're streaming it free all week!

Watch “Rams” free now through this Sunday, May 22nd:

Happy Birthday Dieter!"

@bbbhltz sorry she went through this!

I can say that most of my friendships (and contacts with the wider family) suffered ever since I quit social media, WhatsApp included.

It's sad, really, because the tool shouldn't matter. It made me wonder how deep some relationships were.

What blows my mind about Mastodon is not so much its design or tech.

It's that people there read content that interests them and click links. I'm so used to the complete passivity, even apathy, of Twitter users, that what people do on Mastodon never ceases to amaze me.

#mastodon #fediverse

A few years ago I made this flow chart of which Mastodon posts end up in which timelines!

So, you can see how each instance will have a different local timeline, and even a slightly different federated timeline - and you can see why the federated timeline moves so much faster than the local one, too.

This is why it's important to boost good posts and use hashtags - the fediverse is fragmented and harder to search by nature.

Trine Falbe: The Importance of Ethical Design
Trine Falbe shares her thoughts on the meaning of ethical design and the importance of fundamental respect for consumers in a time where people are starting to shy away from companies and organizations that use digital tools that do not align with their personal values.

@pete actually, thank you for your question. Replying helped me clarifying some choices I made unconsciously.

Was very excited to read about all the interesting work that could be done for styling RSS feeds when @m2m wrote their blog. So when I helped launch the Hazard Podcast site this weekend I went all in on making a fully done-up podcast feed for the site: hazardpodcast.com/rss/podcast/

Post about how I implemented the and on my static site. A few people expressed interest in such a write-up, I hope they weren't looking for something less dependent on third-parties...

This implementation works, I know what everything's doing and why. It's okay, but I'm aware it's the weakest part of my website, plus the only one where an actual third-party is involved.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy: @pete @tagomago @obsolete29 @CrowderSoup
