Using the QuickAdd plugin for Obsidian makes it almost stupidly easy to add notes to my journal and to do's to my list. How have I not set this up before now?!

I use Keyoxide, developed by @yarmo.

• it’s fully open-source and can be self-hosted
• it relies on already existent OpenPGP identity proofs via notations — your identities never leave your OpenPGP key
• as such, one doesn’t need an account
• one can verify XMPP, IRC, Mastodon, Pleroma, Owncast, etc. New proofs are easy to implement

My favourite feature is the ability to use WKD to be able to use email addresses instead of fingerprints, like

Looking forward to representing Small Tech (the exact opposite of Big Tech) and a view of human beings as *people* – not mere “consumers” – at the industry stage of the MediaTech Hub conference on Wednesday (I’ll be taking part virtually).

@marcel_kolaja @mozilla please remember that Twitter had a decade to bring interoperability to their platform. They didn't.

Not only that, but they kept chipping away on any interoperability that was there from the start, for example on open RSS feeds for public tweets.

They are paying lip service to the idea of interoperability and open standards now, nothing more.

Ugh, RIP Reddit.

I thought it was fake or something but it's not, they're effectively converting upvotes into crypto coins:

And in this dystopian little promo they pitch how monetising your every tiniest action is actually freedom:

Apparently the Facebook mobile app (not that I'd use such a thing) can obtain your location regardless of preferences by correlating the phone accelerometer motion with other users - such as someone in the same car.

This is the level of dystopia we are at.

My latest column for Locus Magazine is "The Unimaginable," about the relationship of science fiction plays to the future. Sf is a literature of inspiration and warning, not prediction.

I mean, thank goodness. If the future was predictable, there'd be no point in getting out of bed, because the future would arrive irrespective of our actions. Sfnal tales that posit a predictable future (like Asimov's "Foundation" or Heinlein's "Jonathan Hoag") are pure fatalism.

I just authored an introduction to #solid in a runnable Nextjournal notebook. If you're curious about how this next-gen internet technology works, it doesn't get much easier than running a server in a notebook. #SolidProject

I got zero responses last time I hit up the Fediverse offering paid creative work, but I'm not giving up!

Some #Owncast features being worked on require iconography. And while we could use an icon library or something like Fiverr it'd be nice to work with an illustrator on the Fediverse who focuses on icons to have something that is custom.

This is paid work, so please boost and tell your friends.

Feel free to message me on the fediverse or email me:

⚠️ #Mastodon v3.4.2 is out with some bug fixes! It is a backport release, if you are already using latest code from the main branch, you do not need it.

Considering making some changes to the @write_as Free plan:

- A limit on overall number of posts
- Closing new Free registrations for a few months, to personally give me some breathing room

Would love to hear your thoughts on the forum:

@Gargron It's basically a locked account like Mastodon has, we use the term 'private' rather than 'locked' as that is what Instagram uses.

When you "go private" you can also choose how to handle followers.

#NonProfits that through their use of #trackers, #cookies and keystroke monitors are full-blown enablers of #SurveillanceCapitalism even when dealing with #Privacy-sensitive data, should be aware of this practice and highly dubious #Ethics that are involved.

(Actually it can be the complete absence of morals and ethics, but for small initiatives there's the benefit of the doubt that they are just ignorant).

Remove that shite and be on a path to regain #Trust.

Hey #fediverse

how about “Decentralised Identifiers” you asked?

Let's see, this is TODAY

Centralised messenger Signal has just announced that they are making part of their server software closed source. They claim it is to fight spam, but by using closed source they make it impossible for outsiders to verify the truth. This is worrying.

We really, really need a fully open, decentralised alternative to Signal.

There are several alternatives being developed, please support them:

➡️ @snikket_im

➡️ @xmpp

➡️ @matrix

➡️ @delta

➡️ @briar

➡️ @Jami

#Signal #Alternatives #Privacy

One thing I'm kind of interested in exploring is building a converter capable of importing stuff from other networks and turning it into native #ActivityPub data attached to an account.

It would take some doing to figure out how to make it work, but I really like the idea of weaving different parts of your social graph together to bring into the fediverse.

« Since 1995 there have been 25 global conferences on climate change. At every one our so-called political leaders have kicked the can down the road and sung from a bright green hymnbook […] Blah, blah blah has become the standard substitute for the conversation that needs to occur at global conferences and in every public venue : how to shrink the economy and beat a sustainable retreat ? »

The only good future is decentralized or distributed. If we allow everything to be centralized for the sake of convenience, or whatever, then the same dynamics of colonialism will play out as did in the physical economy. Colonialism may be efficient under some very narrowly defined metric, like profit, but it is not ethical.
